David Watkinson describes himself as “a modern artist in its truest sense”, referencing his use of modern techniques to
challenge traditional practices. Focusing heavily on kinetic pieces, he aims to create contemplative visual experiences by sculpting unfamiliar forms. Watkinson began his training at Wrexham College of Art and continued onto Leeds Metropolitan University where he attained a B.A Hons in Fine Art. Since then he has worked as a full time sculptor from his studios in Leeds.
“The large organic forms are a more direct homage to Mother Nature and the wonders of evolution" I make kinetic sculpture to push the boundaries of traditional static forms. Kinetic sculpture gives back to the viewer in a way which static work cannot, it has a different way of engaging, it plays with form, light, balance and movement through space, there is tension and drama as the Earth’s elemental forces orchestrate its movement. The balance of my work is
critical, I now work in the realms where a fraction of a gram can alter a piece dramatically. Happily my years accumulated knowledge, of experimentation and prototyping , enable me to explore my art and push for new forms to express my underlying concepts. Kinetic art is my passion, it allows me to create sculpture that interacts in a harmonious way with the world, it is almost a life form; it is controlled yet beyond my control. It allows the viewer to see the wind, to watch gravity in action and as the sculpture faithfully obeys the laws of physics, it is a reminder that we are part
of a greater Universe." DW
